The island on foot: The best levada and vereda trails in Madeira

Visiting Madeira and not hiking one of its levadas or veredas is like visiting Paris and skipping the Eiffel Toweryou’d be missing out on one of the most iconic and fascinating experiences the archipelago has to offer.

These scenic paths winding through mountains, valleys, and forests are a major draw for visitors, offering a unique connection to the island’s history, geography, and natural beauty.

Levadas are man-made irrigation channels built since the early days of Madeira’s settlement. They were designed to transport water from the mountains to sugarcane plantations and local populations. The levadas, which run through the lush Laurissilva Forest – a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site – are accompanied by walking trails of varying lengths and difficulties, making them perfect for scenic hikes.

On the other hand, veredas are trails that don’t necessarily follow water channels, but they cross equally stunning landscapes, often offering more challenging routes with steeper climbs. Both options promise a rewarding hike, whether you go solo or with an organized tour. So lace up your boots and discover this Madeiran treasure!
